Over the past couple of years, two hair trends have taken the hair industry by storm. Stylists are being asked by their clients to give them the popular ombré (pronounced om-bree) or balayage (pronounced bah-lee-AHZGE) looks. While both are absolutely gorgeous and look very similar, there are some more differences, besides the technique. Before asking your stylist for the ombré or balayage look, check out our tips on deciding the best choice for you:
Ombré is the gradual lightening of the hair, this look consists of darker roots and lighter ends. If you’re ok with having darker roots, and having to curl your hair- the ombré look is for you. This look usually leaves clients looking like they haven’t visited a salon in quite some time, hence the darker roots. Curling your hair or leaving it wavy may be necessary because the contrast between the roots and the lighter parts of hair is more drastic, opposed to the balayage look. Curling of the hair may not be appealing to someone on the go!

Balayage is a more, natural, sun-kissed look. Balayage means “to sweep” in French-this is exactly what your stylist is doing while applying the lighter color to your hair. While applying the lighter color to your hair, the brush strokes are horizontal to the front and back of your hair strands. Ultimately, balayage can be less maintenance. When styling your hair, you can wear your hair straight or curled. Also, the color is less subtle and this may mean less trips to the salon.
